Architecture of 19th century Europe

For the love of art
In a sense, classicism was a reaction to the intemperance of the Baroque that preceded it, as well as to the incredibly fashionable pseudo-gothic. Both of these styles are drawn to the past, "when life was simpler": pseudo—Gothic - in the Middle Ages, and classicism — in Roman and Greek antiquity. Two figures stand out in the vanguard of the new style — John Saun and John Nash.
Greek architecture (1753-1837) is particularly distinctive. Unlike previous imitation styles, it can be described as "classical abstraction". In his works, specific elements are developed: the spatial possibilities of the walls are emphasized by various niches and projections, the surface is devoid of magnificent decoration, if stucco is used, then its convexity is minimal, or it is recessed into the wall surface. The lighting is designed to create additional optical effects. Sensory perception of space plays no less important role than external harmony and geometric logic. The overall impression is more due to the organization of light and space than to the form and decor. Soane's own house at Lin Colnes Inn in London (1812) is a perfect example of his style. A wonderful building is located on a standard site for a typical building, each wall has several "recesses", and many lucarnas are hidden on top of the roof, allowing light to penetrate far into the building.
Churches of Soun
Soun's commitment to simplicity is particularly evident in two London churches. There is a plinth on the western facade of St. John's Church, but there is no portico; the pylons flanking the entrance rest on the cornice, forming the base of a square tower. In St. Peter's Church in Walworth, the facade is undisturbed, only the recessed porch is decorated with an Ionic colonnade. The frieze runs along the entire building, emphasizing the main horizontal, contrasting with the very narrow bell tower.
Obsessive fashion fans
Unlike Soane, who aspired to individuality, John Nash (1752-1835) followed fashion and was ready to build anything and in any style, He designed country houses — Luscombe Castle in Devon (1800 — 1804) was organized as an asymmetrical castle in the spirit of Gothic, and Cronkhill in Shropshire (1806) has the picturesqueness of a traditional Italian building. (1802-1821) with bulbous domes and minarets is made in oriental style. The most interesting of his works, due not only to its scale, but also to its originality, is the layout of an entire area in London (begun in 1811), from Regent's Park, Portland Place and Regent Street to the Carlton House Terrace ensemble and the Church of All Souls on Landham Place (1822-1825). The most interesting is the Crescent Park at the beginning of Portland Place with a simple and austere plastered facade and an Ionic colonnade with double columns.
